Osteopathy for Babies

By Jo Meon – Osteopath

Why might a baby see an osteopath?

Osteopathy can help and support children and families through difficult developmental
phases by gently working on the musculoskeletal system. Common reasons that parents
bring their babies to see an osteopath include:

  • Feeding and latch problems
  • a baby receives osteopathic treatment

    Unsettled babies and sleep problems

  • Flat head (Plagiocephaly)
  • Torticollis and neck problems
  • Digestive problems
  • Birth trauma and difficult births

What will you be doing to my baby?

Your first appointment will be one hour. We’ll take a detailed history of your pregnancy and
birth and perform a hands-on examination to ensure that osteopathic care is appropriate.
We will look at how your baby moves, and also look inside their mouth for tongue tie or
other problems. If the baby needs to feed or take a break, we give plenty of time to keep
the parents and baby happy.

We never use any strong treatment or force with babies. We use techniques such as
movement, stretching, and gentle holds to release tension. We often place joints in a
position of ease and use the baby’s breathing and general movement to help unwind tissues.

A number of observational research studies completed in 2021 concluded that parents
found osteopathic intervention was associated with major positive changes for health
disturbances such as infant asymmetry, plagiocephaly, irritability, feeding disorders,
excessive crying and sleep issues. (Mills, 2021, Schwerla, et al, 2021)

Both Jo Meon and Alison Daniel have completed additional training in treating babies and children.
